The story, straight
Coinbase lets people buy and sell crypto. It also owns crypto as an investment.
Those are different activities: customer trading generates business revenue; changes in the value of Coinbase's own investments can affect its reported profit.
For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, Coinbase reported $718.7 million in net income, up 66% from $432.6 million a year earlier. Its results included a $715.0 million net gain on crypto held for investment.
That gain is not customer money, trading fees or cash deposited in the bank. Think of owning a collectible that becomes more valuable: a higher valuation isn't the same as someone handing you money.
Investment gains can also reverse.
Naturally, Lil'meme has arrived at an imaginary ATM with a printed portfolio screenshot.
Apparently the machine wants money, not evidence of a good quarter. 🚀
Coinbase separately reported $77.7 million in adjusted net income, its alternative profit measure excluding investment gains and their tax effects. That measure isn't cash either.
The useful lesson: don't stop at the biggest profit number. Ask what produced it, whether it reflects the operating business, and whether it can happen again.
Profit and cash answer different questions.
