The story, straight
A salary is the money a job pays you. Knowing it before applying lets you check whether the work could cover your bills.
Otherwise, you're shopping for a livelihood with the price tags removed.
The UK government announced on 5 November that it plans legislation requiring employers to publish salary information in job adverts. It says legislation will come forward as soon as possible.
This is a plan, not a requirement already in force. Details covering scope, required information, implementation and enforcement are still to come.
Lil'meme has taken the logical next step: feeding a job advert into a cash machine and requesting a withdrawal of competitive salary. Apparently, exciting opportunities aren't legal tender either.
The useful change would be knowing the pay before spending time applying. That could help applicants focus on jobs that meet their needs.
Publishing salaries can also help expose unjustified pay differences; it doesn't automatically fix them.
Until the law changes, the government is asking employers to show salaries voluntarily. Applicants can ask about pay early.
A job interview shouldn't need a spoiler warning for the wage.

Less wasted effort.
